SIPP
What is SIPP?
SIPP is part of Amazon’s broader Sustainable Packaging Programme, created to reduce excess packaging, improve fulfilment efficiency, and minimise environmental impact.
Like SIOC, the SIPP designation confirms that a product’s packaging is robust and compliant enough to ship directly to customers without re-boxing or additional prep work at fulfilment centres.
How SIPP Works:
- Vendor Certification:
- The vendor submits packaging for evaluation under Amazon’s Packaging Certification guidelines.
- Packaging must protect the product during shipping, display proper labelling, and be suitable for direct customer delivery.
- Fulfilment Process:
- SIPP-certified ASINs bypass repackaging at Amazon’s fulfilment centres.
- Only a shipping label is applied to the product’s original box.
- Customer Experience:
- The customer receives the item in the branded manufacturer packaging, typically without extra cardboard or filler.
SIPP vs. SIOC:
Key Requirements for SIPP Certification:
- Must pass Amazon’s ISTA 6-Amazon Type A transit test.
- Must have a flat, scannable surface for Amazon shipping labels.
- Must not expose sensitive or theft-prone branding.
- Must protect contents adequately for the full delivery chain.
Benefits for Amazon:
- Operational efficiency: Eliminates the need for repackaging, reducing fulfilment time.
- Lower costs: Reduces materials, labour, and shipping weight.
- Environmental impact: Aligns with Amazon’s “Climate Pledge Friendly” goals.
Benefits for Vendors:
- Cost savings: Avoids Amazon’s Prep or Repack fees for non-compliant packaging.
- Customer appeal: Reduces waste and enhances brand perception.
- Sustainability alignment: Demonstrates environmental responsibility.
Challenges:
- Testing compliance: Packaging must meet durability and dimension requirements.
- Visibility risks: Branded boxes may attract theft in some delivery environments.
- Limited suitability: Not all fragile or sensitive items can qualify.
Why It Matters:
SIPP supports Amazon’s global mission to ship products with less waste and lower carbon emissions while ensuring safe, efficient delivery.
It also enables vendors to reduce costs and improve their environmental footprint without compromising customer satisfaction.
Example:
A vacuum cleaner manufacturer certifies its packaging under SIPP.
Amazon ships the item in its branded box with a shipping label only - reducing packaging waste by 30% and saving $0.50 per shipment.
In short:
SIPP (Ships in Product Packaging) means the product’s original packaging is durable and compliant enough to be shipped directly to customers - equivalent to SIOC (Ships in Own Container) - reducing packaging waste and fulfilment costs.
