NIS
What is NIS?
New Item Setup (NIS) refers to the procedure Amazon vendors or sellers follow to introduce a new ASIN (product) to the Amazon catalog. The NIS process ensures that a product has all the necessary content, attributes, and compliance in place before it becomes available for purchase.
Core components of NIS:
- Product title, bullet points, and description
- Category selection and item type
- Images and videos
- Brand and manufacturer details
- GTIN/UPC/EAN or ASIN mapping
- Pricing and cost information
- Shipping dimensions and weights
- Regulatory documents (e.g. battery, hazmat, dietary compliance)
Channels where NIS happens:
- Vendor Central (via Excel NIS templates, Vendor APIs, or UI forms)
- Seller Central (via Add a Product, bulk file upload, or third-party tools)
Why NIS matters:
- Impacts time to market for new products
- Affects search discoverability, Buy Box eligibility, and compliance status
- Delays or missing data can lead to listing suppression or PO delays
- Proper setup is critical for A+ Content, Brand Registry, and advertising readiness
💡 Example: A new kitchen gadget must go through NIS, including title, GTIN, dimensions, packaging details, and product claims before Amazon lists it live.
In short:
NIS (New Item Setup) is the structured process of onboarding a new product to Amazon’s catalog - ensuring it’s fully listed, compliant, and ready for sale.
