nIXD
What is nIXD?
A National Inbound Cross Dock (nIXD) is a key node in Amazon’s domestic supply chain network, designed to consolidate and redirect inbound shipments from vendors to the appropriate regional Fulfillment Centers (FCs) based on demand and location.
Core functions of nIXDs:
- Receive palletized or containerized shipments from across the U.S.
- Sort and break down freight based on destination FCs
- Create smaller, optimized outbound loads for local fulfillment
- Help reduce inventory imbalance, storage costs, and inbound lead times
What makes it “National”:
- Accepts inbound freight from any part of the country, not just local zones
- Serves as a hub-and-spoke routing point for Amazon’s broader fulfillment ecosystem
- Supports vendor consolidation, bulk replenishment, and launch scaling
Why nIXDs matter:
- Improves inventory distribution and shelf availability
- Minimizes inbound shipping inefficiencies
- Accelerates replenishment to FCs closer to the end customer
- Vendors working with nIXDs must often follow strict routing and labeling guidelines
💡 Example: A vendor in Georgia sends a full truckload to an nIXD in Texas. Amazon then redistributes that inventory to FCs in California, Florida, and Illinois based on real-time demand.
In short:
nIXD (National Inbound Cross Dock) is an Amazon facility that accepts freight from vendors nationwide and routes it to multiple fulfillment centers - streamlining inbound logistics without shipping to customers directly.
